Environmental & Social Impact Assessment for the Onshore Processing Plant Component of the Gas Infrastructure Project

The Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC/Ghana Gas), newly incorporated company, is an agency of state under the Ministry of Energy. Ghana Gas’ functions include: “Own, manage and develop a national network of gas pipelines and gas treatment and storage facilities; acquire by purchase or otherwise, construct, establish, manage, operate and maintain and otherwise deal with all gas transmission and processing facilities, works, buildings, conveniences and other systems necessary to gather, transport, treat or store gas. The company is also to market and sell gas as well as carry out any general commercial activities related to the safe and reliable operation of the gas infrastructure.
Ghana Gas is proposing to construct, install and operate an onshore natural gas processing plant (GPP) at Atuabo in the Ellembele District of the Western Region.
In line with legal requirements of the country, Ghana Gas has registered the proposed gas processing plant project to be sited in the Ellembele District in the Western Region with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The Agency has confirmed that the proposed project falls in a category for which an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is required. A Scoping Report was subsequently prepared and submitted and review comments received. This draft EIS is therefore being submitted in fulfilment of the EIA requirements in the country.
